News Focus 1

A senior U.S. official on Tuesday reported that U.S Vice President Mike Pence, who was slated to meet with the leader of the Solomon islands,  Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare, has now cancelled those plans following the Pacific island’s decision to discontinue its relationship with Taiwan in favor of China.

Sogavare has apparently stressed the island’s need for help in infrastructure development, and ahead of its decision, China had dedicated $8.5 million in development funds.

With the Solomon Island’s decision, only 16 countries now have formal ties with Taiwan, many of which are smaller, less-developed countries in Central America and the Pacific.

An emergency ban of all vaping products with flavors outside of the tobacco and menthol range has been approved by the New York state Department of Health’s Public Health and Health Planning Council .

The Center for Disease Control reported recently that 27.5 percent of U.S. high school students have used an e-cigarette within the last 30 days, with nearly 60 percent of those who vaped reported use of fruit, menthol, and mint flavors. Other recent research published in the Journal of the American Medical Association showed that vaping among adults aged 18-24 shot up 46 percent from 2017 to 2018 and that the trend has been popularized  by flavored vaping products.

Following a two week grace period, the ban will be enforced beginning October 4th.

News Focus 3

Amid escalating global competition over economic dominance as evidenced in the trade war between the United States and China, the Japanese government is now considering the addition of a new economic policy division to the National Security Secretariat (NSS).

The decision comes as the government sees the need for the country to create a system encompassing the integrated promotion of foreign, security and economic policies as the recent economic leadership struggle overseas is closely related to Japan’s national security.

The new division will be focused on planning strategic economic policy measures, with the apparent aim of "economic security" — a conviction to ensure national security through economic means such as energy, resources and food.
